The woman had walked back and forth on a little knoll

or mountain as she made a path looking for her child.

She heard a spirit voice say, "Look under your foot."

This was in the middle of her path. Under her foot was

the Peyote symbol. She ate it. Out of it life starts all

all over again. The woman walked back and forth on the

knoll or ridge and made a road and found the herb in

the middle of it. This was Father Peyote.

The tepee is empty during the prayer of the leader of the

ceremony. Only the fire is burning there. The leader

then enters and goes to stand behind the altar and fire,

faces doorway. The drummer comes after him - he is

known as the second chief man. They face doorway.

Then other members of cult come in and sit down on

right. Father of child is last to enter. He seals the circle

of onlookers, sitting to right of doorway. Father of child

stays with the fire to the last. The first thing that is

done, the herb is put on the altar. Then the leader has a

smoke in his bag and takes it out. Sometimes the smoke

is rolled in leaves. He takes the smoke and passes it to

the right. Everyone takes it in order and rolls a cigarette,

sometimes of cornstalks. Everything is now ready and

the leader orders the fireman to bring his charcoal or fire

from the fire. The meeting is now ready to start, as all
