To me the cross was a vision of the soul saved. Birds

are two yellow hammers, male and female. Each little

design on their wings is result of prayer for the design.

The fire has been burning all night. In the morning the

fireman heaps the ashes in two mounds of burning

charcoal. These are also the shapes of bird's wings. At

the base of these the ashes are made in a line to look

like feathers. Then another mound is made at the base

and in between these to represent the bird's tail. The

members gaze into the structure of these ashes, into the

designs of the great bird, and inspiration comes. No two

people see the design the same way. Even the smallest

notch at the tip of one of the wings might create an

an inspiration for the right design, say, for the beadwork

on the gourd. The feather tassels on some of the objects

were ordinarily seen in the mounds as yellow flames in

a line.

I prayed always to be on the right road. One of the

prayers connected with the painting of the Peyote

designs was to the messenger god to "Pity me and guide

me on the right road for my life." There are thousands

of prayers, thousands of designs. I am always trying to

pray to the unknown mystery which can only be called

Light. I prayed constantly to be made humble. "Have
