To
me the cross was a vision of the soul saved. Birds are two yellow hammers,
male and female. Each little design on their wings is result of prayer
for the design. The fire has been burning all night. In the morning the
fireman heaps the ashes in two mounds of burning charcoal. These
are also the shapes of bird's wings. At the base of these the ashes are
made in a line to look like feathers. Then another mound is made at the
base and in between these to represent the bird's tail. The
members gaze into the structure of these ashes, into the designs of
the great bird, and inspiration comes. No two people see the design the
same way. Even the smallest notch at the tip of one of the wings might
create an an inspiration for the right design, say, for the beadwork
on the gourd. The feather tassels on some of the objects were ordinarily
seen in the mounds as yellow flames in a line. I prayed always
to be on the right road. One of the prayers connected with the painting
of the Peyote designs was to the messenger god to "Pity me and guide
me on the right road for my life." There are thousands of prayers,
thousands of designs. I am always trying to pray to the unknown mystery
which can only be called Light. I prayed constantly to be made humble.
