THE WATER BIRD

Under the effect of this herb, when the Water Song

is sung by a father or priest in the morning, I notice a

man's face gradually disappear and then in its place I see

a design where the Water Bird was singing, perched up

on a staff with a peyote gourd or "rattle." This bird was

brilliantly designed on the wing and tail. The fan was

made of Water Bird.

The Water Bird or "Water Darter." A vision or design.

His shrill cries are very musical to the Kiowas.

They regard him as predominate among birds who live

on the water. In his worship, when the time for the

water comes, which is in the morning at dawn,

the Water Bird fan is used. When the Water Song is

sung by a father or priest in the morning the priest's

face disappears and in it's place is the Water Bird,

singing, perched upon a staff with a peyote gourd

or rattle. The fan is made of the feathers of the wings

and tail of the Water Bird.
